This error means that you are trying to use automated key events / mouse move operation on an application which do not support the same.
For stack trace and more details enable debug level log in application
my concern is that it works when I am watching (monitor connected to VM) and then dies when I disconnect.

Key Events and Mouse activity requires screen monitor focus. That is why you are observing this behavior.
